New Principal for YHS, and Two More State Championships

The final weeks of a school year are always busy, with Convocation, the Awards Assembly, and Graduation for seniors, exams for the underclassmen, and the end of the spring athletic seasons for many students. The excitement was heightened this year by the hiring of a new principal for Yarmouth High School, and the wining of State Class B Championships by the softball team and the girls lacrosse team.

On Monday, June 8th the School Committee elected Eric P. Klein as the new principal of Yarmouth High School, replacing Ted Hall, who has served in that position for ten years. Mr. Klein was introduced to the students at the Underclass Awards Assembly on June 9th. He has served as principal at Gray-New Gloucester High School since 2010. Before becoming an administrator, Mr. Klein taught English at Bonny Eagle High School for four years, and Scarborough High School for eight years. He will take over the reins on July 1st. Welcome Eric Klein!!

Saturday, June 20th marked a historic day for Yarmouth High Schools, as three teams were competing for Class B Championships: softball, and both boys and girls lacrosse. We know that we have had two teams competing before, but no one around here can remember three.
In a banner year, several YHS teams/groups had already won championships: boys soccer, volleyball, the Playmakers, and the sailing team.

The softball team faced Herman High School at St. Joseph's College at noon. The team had compiled an impressive 13-3 record in the regular season, and were seeded fourth in the Heal points.
Not even Coach Amy Ashley expected what was to follow. They raced through the Western Maine Class B tournament, shutting out all three opponents. In the Semis, they beat arch-rival Greely, who had defeated the team 12-2 in early May. In the Western Final, they slipped by traditional power Fryeburg Academy by a score of 1-0. Needless to say, pitcher Mari Cooper '16 had a very good week. Against Herman, the team scored some early runs to get ahead, then nipped several Herman rallies to gain the victory. A truly remarkable season for a young team with only two graduating starters.

The lacrosse teams were both playing at Fitzpatrick Stadium in Portland, with the boys at 3:30 pm and the girls at 6:30 pm The boys had registered a 9-3 regular season record, then cruised through the Eastern Maine Class B tournament to earn the chance to face a very strong Cape Elizabeth team in the State Final for the third straight year. Nagged by injuries all year, the team put up a good fight before losing 7-5. Congratulations to Coach David Pearl for another fine season.

The girls lacrosse team had recorded an 8-4 regular season record. Like the boys, they raced through the Eastern Maine Class B tournament, winning all three games by wide margins. Now came the chance to revenge an early season loss to Kennebunk in the state championship. The girls had the lead at the half, but Kennebunk chipped away in the second half and tied the score with only a few minutes left in the game. On to overtime. Lily Watson '16 scored the winner to secure back-to-back championships for the girls and Coach Dorothy Holt.
