Girls Cross Country Wins States, Boys Soccer & Football Still Alive

Saturday, October 31st was a memorable day for YHS athletics, with three teams competing in Class B tournaments.

Most memorably, the Girls Cross Country team won their first State Championship at Twin Brooks in Cumberland. The team scored 65 points, defeating WMC rivals Greely - 78 points - and York - 81 points. The depth of the team proved to be the decisive factor, as two girls from Greely finished first and second. For YHS , Anneka Murrin '18 placed 4th, Abigail Hamilon '17 4th, Grace Cowles '17 14th, Georgia Giese '17 18th, and Lucy Alexander '16 27th. With the victory, the team qualifies for the New England Championships. The Boys Cross Country team raced just after the Girls, finishing 5th.

The soccer teams both played Greely in Class B South Semi-final contests.
The Boys, with a record of 13-1-1, played at home against the team who had tied them two weeks ago. They played a strong game and prevailed 3-1, getting two goals from Matthew Dostie '17, and one from Pat Grant '16. They will play at undefeated Maranacook on Wednesday, November 4th for the regional championship.

The Girls played at Greely against the top-ranked Rangers, who suffered their only loss of the season against YHS on October 17th. Our girls put up a good fight, but lost to a very strong Greely team who was out for redemption. The team ended the season with a record of 7-6-3.

The Football team rolls on with their undefeated season. They opened the Class C South play-offs with a 50-16 Quarter-final victory over Mountain Valley. On Friday, November 6th they will face Fryeburg Academy in the Semis at home in a 7:00 pm contest.

The other teams who qualified for the States were eliminated earlier. The Field Hockey team lost to Spruce Mountain in the Class B South Quarter-finals, 2-1 in overtime, ending their season with a record of 11-3-1. The Volleyball team lost to #1 seeded Cape Elizabeth in the Class A Quarter-finals, 3-0, finishing the season with record of 10-5.
